What do you do?

Curating connoisseurs dabbling in the realm of fashion, art and overall creativity. Most notably, we are at the helm of SHERMAИ|PRESTOИ, a contemporary tailored brand conceptualized for the metropolitan man.

When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate about?

Fashion resonated as a passion for us when we realized that the marketplace was unable to communicate to us as consumers. Cognizant of the budding era of like-minded fashionable men, it became evident that the industry’s inadequacy left this niche unsatisfied.  To help fill that void, we set out to cultivate endeavors that spoke to men not only aesthetically, but conceptually as well.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?

Our ability to turn ideas into reality. Transforming basic materials into works of art. Utilizing our opinions to create a vision that others have learned to share.

What advice do you have for others aspiring to do what you do?

Tell me about you: where are you from, how old are you?

Umm I'm 20 - something. Lol ..I just recently became so fully aware of my age. It isn't that I'm old, I guess just that I'm getting older. 

I was raised in Orlando most of my life and partly miami. It sounds devastatingly bland but I suppose it's how I got such a great imagination. There wasn't much to do in Orlando but read fashion magazines. Like most girls I started with vogue. Miami is pretty much the same except there was a beach.. Which I loved. This is where I began perusing my dream of wardrobing. I started doing test shoots and attending the Art Institute where I learned that merchandising was probably the wrong degree for me and dropped out.

What do you do?

I do a couple of things right now. I left my buying position with a boutique in Miami to chase my dreams here in NY. I'm working to become a full time wardrobe stylist. I also help run a blog with my partner, Von Ford, www.unisixx.com. The site is a compilation of our work, our thoughts and views on new collections, fashion show coverage, interviews with up and coming models etc. 

When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate about?

I knew that I was passionate about fashion after the feeling I got while styling my first photoshoot. Before then it was just a dream. I am still learning, and growing, and falling I'm love with it everyday. Moving to New York was a huge source of inspiration for me and the biggest reality check. Once I got that reality check and knew that I still wanted to do this, I knew it was the right path for me.  

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?

As for now, my biggest accomplishment is just going after my dreams. Moving to this intimidating, making new friends, a new life with no regret and only my ambition. 

What advice do you have for others aspiring to do what you do?

My advice to anyone who wants to be a stylist is to not lose site of your vision. Do your research, learn fashion history, the who's who and what's what, and be your biggest critic

What do you do? 

I work in retail "Urban Outfitters" and I design for my own Line "Omen Brand".

 When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate about?

I knew I wanted to be in fashion around the age of 8 or 9 mainly Fashion Photography, but once I started studying photography I came to the realization that it was just a hobby, and that deep down inside I wanted to design clothing that's reflected me as an artist. 

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?


To date my biggest accomplishment well I'd rather say accomplishments Placing 1st in the Fashion Group International "Red Carpet Competition" where I created a color blocked gown inspired by the famous painting The Swing   by artist Jean-Honore Fragonard, The second would be interning for "Halston Heritage" which is located in NY, and of course starting Omen Brand.

 

What advice do you have for others aspiring to do what you do?

The only advice I would give is to follow your heart and go with your gut feeling. Be willing to test the waters of society, but to remain true to your aesthetic.

Tell me about you: where are you from, how old are you?

Newly 24 and born in Washington, DC, I’m an emerging fashion designer and the fashion world is coming to know me as Syreeta C.

What do you do?

I’m a translator. I often work with the metaphor: the wearer as the messenger and fashion as the medium, for we all have a story to be told. Fashion (and even the lack thereof) tells an individual's unique story - where you're from, where you're going... your culture, your ideals, who YOU are. Fashion has the ability to break barriers - language and otherwise - and communicate more accurately than the most colorful of words. From this, my catchphrase “speak sans speech” was born.
It’s my job as a designer to help the wearer express and relay his or her own unique messages for the world to see. With a focus on edgy, yet sophisticated womenswear, I love designing with contrast – simple lines meet texture and elegance marries quirks.

When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate about?

As a child, I was equally academic and creative. I grew up with goals of being a doctor. Coincidentally, I was regularly reprimanded for slicing and dicing my own clothing to create new styles for my dolls. (I’d proclaim that I was bored with the styles already… even if I’d only worn it a time or two.) I went to high school on a science and technology scholarship, but attended Syracuse University’s Summer College For High School Student’s program in fashion design after my junior year. It was probably then that I had the “lightbulb moment,” realizing that my passion had been working it’s way to the surface all along. Slicing and dicing and creating was what I was destined to do. I was accepted into Syracuse University’s Fashion Design BFA program the following year.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?

As a graduating senior at Syracuse, my senior collection was presented before a jury to determine selection for the university’s annual Visual and Performing Arts College Gala in New York City. Only the top collections are chosen and I was proud to be one of them. One of the reasons that this shines as one of my brightest accomplishments is because of my challenge to myself when creating my senior collection. I had illustrated an all-black collection among others to consider for my final collection. I initially set this collection aside automatically, deeming it “too hard” because usually color is the gateway to creating interest in clothing. After further thought, I decided that if I could pull off placement as a top collection without the use of color, then it’d be a great milestone as a designer and person. This moment will always be a reminder to myself to morph challenge into motivation and creativity.

At a very young age we made paper dolls and made new outfits for them everyday. We really recognized it as an interest in fashion in our later high school years.

 

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
 

Our First official Fashion Week Show for Spring 2013 has been our biggest fashion accomplishment. This upcoming show will be our second!

What advice do you have for others aspiring to do what you do?

What do you do?

I am an artist who dabbles in music (rapper) and fashion (clothing designer). I'm currently working on building up my brand, The Regal People, and finishing my eighth record titled YDKMTW (You Don't Know Me Too Welle).

When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate about?
 

I never really knew that fashion would be something that I would become passionate about. I've always loved to express myself and working with my hands. Fashion came about as my yearning to be different grew bigger over the past few years.

 

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
 

Wow. My biggest accomplishment to date would have to be having the guts to actually put myself out there by getting on stages and performing and proving to myself that I can achieve what I believe - as corny as that may sound. But besides that I would have to say opening my own boutique. It's the reason why I got my degree in Fashion Merchandising in the first place.

What advice do you have for others aspiring to do what you do?
 

The only advice I have for others is to just take that leap. Creativity takes courage and being an entrepreneur takes risks. You'll fall flat on your face sometimes. That's okay. The important part is that you get back up and keep going.

Hi, my name is Mera Anwar 27, I am the designer behind the label MIRI. I graduated from Parsons New School of Design with a degree in Fashion Design. I’ve had the pleasure of working for amazing designers before I ventured off on my own with the label MIRI.

What do you do?

I design RTW contemporary women's clothing. The ideal MIRI woman is one who likes to reinvent the classics, whether it be an embellished collar or an asymmetrical hem. Most of my clients are all about appreciating the little details,from hand dyed ombre silks to sheer embroidered lace.

When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate about?

Fashion design and the creative field in general has always been a huge part of my life. My late teenage years were when I really started to build my portfolio with hand sewn pieces, tapestries and some modern paintings.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
 

I find myself making new accomplishments everyday, but if I were to pick something in particular... It would be when I moved to Paris to work for couture designer Jasmin Santanen. Aside from starting my own line, I'd say my time in Paris what truly inspired me to make my dream a reality.

What advice do you have for others aspiring to do what you do?

 

I would encourage all aspiring artists to be diligent, determined, and always curious. The world of fashion can appear cyclical to some but designers are in a constant state of change and improvement.

I’m originally from Pasadena. A 25 year old Californian living in New Orleans.
 

What do you do?

I’m a creator of experience, evoker of emotion. On paper though, I’m an artist, wearable artist, jewelry designer, and I teach children how to express themselves through jewelry when the opportunity arises. I create bamboo sconces and wearable art.

 

When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate about?

 

The root of my experience has been the artistic process of the work but to pursue the fashion aspect of my work, I decided in June after visiting Paris for a Fashion Weekend Show I participated in, the architecture was truly inspiring and I decided that I could fuse the two together.

 

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?

 

My biggest accomplishment was selling my work at Labo Ethnik International Show of New Designers in Paris, France. I was invited last minute and worked extremely hard to get the funds and inventory to present my work.

 

What advice do you have for others aspiring to do what you do?

 

My advice: Go with your gut. It’s your individual compass for your life’s journey. Even when it looks like it’s impossible, jump off that cliff and give it a try.

What do you do?

 I am wardrobe stylist and co-owner/CMO of national brand Babylon Cartel & Co. I have most recently been steering towards creative consultant for artist and other brands.

 

 

 

When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate about?

 

 I think my introduction into fashion is little different than others. I first realized that I wanted to work in fashion was when I first watched the movie Casino. The swag, confidence, class gangsta mental and color blocking of Robert Deniro's character, Sam Rothstein gave me my first taste of wardrobe styling. Once I discovered that it was someone's job/responsibility to construct a wardrobe around a character or personality, I wanted that job.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?

 

That's a tough one. There has been a few. One of biggest accomplishments YTD is styling and dressing models for NYFW in 2 runway shows. Owning a brand responsible for curating concert events in the city of Philadelphia with up and coming acts such as Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q (twice), A$AP, Lil B, Gilbere Forte, among others.

 

 

 

What advice do you have for others aspiring to do what you do?

 

My advice to anyone who has dreams or aspirations of engaging in any creative industry is to sharpen your craft before you allow anyone to judge it. Practice as much as possible in order for you to create great work.

We are first generation Haitian-Americans born in Washington D.C and raised in Northern Virginia. DMV to the fullest! Although we live in the Philly area right now lol. Vanessa is 29 years old and Stephanie is 27 years old.

What do you do?

We are sisters and co-owners of Bisoux Jewelry, LLC. We are a jewelry retailers, stylists and bloggers.

When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate about?

I, Vanessa, started collecting jewelry here and there about seven years ago which has grown into pretty big collection. I loved browsing through estate sales, yard sales, thrift stores, antique shops and bazaars for unique trinkets and baubles. Ethnic jewelry especially caught my eye, and I always made sure to pick something up when I was traveling.  I've always appreciated well-made, unique statement jewelry as works of art to adorn myself with! Stephanie knew a few designers who started to notice our pieces and asked to use them to enhance their clothing lines for fashion shows and magazine publications. The more we worked with designers the more jobs we would get to help style their line, and other designers began to notice too! We saw a niche and jumped on it! We also began selling some of our favorite pieces online with great success!

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?

One of our most recent and biggest accomplishments was landing a styling job for Trew Music's "Incredible, Fantastic Experience" music video. We were responsible for the wardrobe, jewelry and styling of the whole production. It was also our first time styling a male and we are officially his personal stylists as a result of that job! My name is Ashton Hodges and I'm 31 years old.  I'm a DC metro area native from Silver Spring Maryland.   My  Label is called " Twisted Aristocrat"


What do you do? 

The question should be " What don't you do?"  I  do everything.  I design the pieces from start to finish and produce them.  I run and maintain all the social media sites, do the graphic design, photography and marketing.  I think it's important to be able to do everything, at least in the beginning of  the project. 

When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate about?

I became interested in fashion when I was about 27, I had just moved back to DC from L.A.  I was  really exposed to fashion and designer brands out there. People wear anything and everything out there it's not conservative like DC.  I took a job as a menswear and men's Accessories Manager at Urban Outfitters.  Thats when I found my style.  I  love street-wear brands mixed with more formal pieces. 

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?

Right now I'd have to say starting this project and gaining a following through social media... even before the label has officially launched.  In about a month's time we have gained over 300 Facebook "likes".

What advice do you have for others aspiring to do what you do?

When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate about?

Growing up in DC, having your own identity was something that you had to exude. DC has always been a creative city, and also a trend chasing city at the same time. I knew my life would include Fashion when I was about 12 years old. I started working at a local DC Urban shop, SOLO Sports. That's where I learned about operating a business, sourcing, production, management, and design. However I won't say I'm passionate about "Fashion" I think the industry is flooded with too many people who are uneducated about the history of Fashion, and everything that entails working in the industry. I'm passionate about "organically cool" things. I can't quote every designer on the runway, or tell you what collection that piece was apart of like some of my friends. I just appreciate style that is not forced. That's where I passion lies. Doing what you love with your style, wearing what you feel is the best representative of you as a person, and disregarding trends. That's what being an INDIVIDUAL is all about!

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date? 


Studying Abroad in South Africa (where I created the name for BLACK Collection, and sparked the idea of starting my own business), BLACK Collection collaborating with Mary J. Blige's Non-Profit FFAWN for special edition product release, and most importantly losing the fear, and following my dreams. (That's the biggest one)

What advice do you have for others aspiring to do what you do?

Keep your Faith! Believe in yourself, think as big as you possibly can, and don't compromise your goals for anyone. Be prepared to lose it all on the pursue. There's no safe way to take risk! Be willing to allow things to grow, and change. Don't be fooled by the microwaveable society we currently live in. Activity, and action are two different things.

When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate about?

Wow!!! I was definitely an artistic child. I had my hands in music, fashion, acting, everything as a child and while I was child modeling I realized that I was more interested in the behind the scenes production and how the clothes I was modeling were made. Once I realized this I told my mom that I didn't want to be in front of the camera anymore and I got on her sewing machine and taught myself how to sew. That next year I was a feature designer in a fashion show while also being a featured model. I was so excited and I said this is it for the rest of my life. When I make up my mind to do something I just do it and make it happen and it's been this ever since.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?

My biggest accomplishment to me was really hard to come up with because as a designer i'm a really humble person.. I'm a perfectionist but quiet about my work but after much thought I have two big accomplishments.. My first full collection was conceived while in college and it was a terribly strenuous process. The emotional roller coaster that comes with building and creating a collection is un matched and after graduation the passion that went into that collection was well worth it. That collection still gets notice today and is my pride and joy. My second biggest accomplishment was VERY recent. I have launched my own online boutique which opens me up to a whole other branch of clientele. Having my own shop on my own is very big to me and it's something I did on my own so I'm very excited about it.

Tell me about you: where are you from, how old are you?

I'm 31. Was born in a small town outside of Cleveland, but my heart
knew it found "home" when I moved to Chicago for law school.

What do you do?

I'm a patent attorney and currently work for a patent search firm.

When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate
about?

This might sound silly, but I didn't realize it was something I
was passionate about until I started Accoutre. Prior to that, I've
been more interested in style, which is why I started making my own
bow ties... To create something individualized to suit my own style.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?

Graduating law school.

What advice do you have for others aspiring to do what you do?

Make sure you surround yourself with good people, friends who are
supportive. Trying to start your own business is a ton of work and
you're probably not going to sleep a lot.
